Ideas for taking advantage of the space offered by terraces and balconies

The terrace is a multipurpose space inside the house. Many people choose it as an open space to enjoy the outdoors; others, however, prefer to close this space and incorporate it into the home. The great advantage of this option is that the views to the outside are maintained without suffering adverse weather conditions, saving the work of removing or covering seasonal furniture in winter, as happens on outdoor terraces.

The house thus gains an internal space that can be used in different ways: as a living room, extension of the living room or bedroom and even as a small greenhouse. There are several options to start with a wardrobe, it can be total or partial, we can choose the type of material to use and we always exercise our right to creativity.

Closed from the rain and open to the garden

We are faced with one of those mixed solutions that do not completely close the terrace. Through a structure made with wooden beams inclined towards the water and glass, it is possible to cover the terrace space and leave a part open towards a wonderful garden. In this way you are protected from the rain and you get a new rest area where you can enjoy a good read in the open air or listen to music without worrying about the weather.

A more classic idea

This first example shows us a standard solution for the decision to build a fence. Keeping the planters facing outwards, the entire perimeter of the terrace was covered with glass panels, wider in the lower part and narrower in the upper half. Space is used and visibility is not lost. An ideal solution for areas with a high rainfall rate, such as northern Spain.

Glass curtains

We continue into northern Spain, where rain and bad weather prevail for most of the year. Here, this specialized company from the Basque Country offers us a variety of resources so that unfavorable weather does not affect the terrace. A system of glass curtains isolates the terrace from heat and rain, maintaining the feeling of being in an open space. It is still a terrace but without the disadvantages of the outside.

Adaptation to the shape of the terrace

The shape of some terraces is somewhat irregular. When it is closed the visual impact from the outside can be too strong. In this image you can see an example of how the house on the top floor breaks with the whole aesthetics of the balcony and the building, and probably also with the norms of the neighboring community, while the one located just below, with a fence. Discreet, in glass panels, it integrates perfectly with the aesthetics of the facade.

The pergola will always be a suitable choice

Without becoming a fence, but rather an elegant way to cover the surface of a terrace, the pergola is a very classic option for those who escape from more complex work. In this model the fabric is waterproof and is anchored to the different trees, making it easier for water to fall on the sides. It is ideal for warmer areas, near the sea, where the breeze is always welcome.

A gazebo made of tents

The typical Mediterranean terrace does not require a complete fence. There are much more elegant and discreet solutions. Among the former, wooden beams stretch across the ceiling, like a gazebo. And as an example of subtlety, by incorporating cotton curtains between the support pillars, you get a covered and open space at the same time to enjoy the wonderful landscape of the island.

A space overlooking the city center

We find this luxurious apartment whose main room, the living room, has a terrace overlooking the city. Closed with a three-door climalit aluminum structure, which also allows it to be opened, it becomes a wonderful panoramic point, overlooking one of the most spectacular architectural complexes in the city.

Play with light

And now, an example of a versatile terrace cover. This is the idea, in which some sliding panels in treated external wood act as a closure, leaving us to decide which part remains open and which is closed. A solution that allows, among other things, the control of light.

External solarium, internal terrace

Sometimes you are lucky enough to have a sun terrace and a swimming pool. This gives us the possibility of leaving the solarium open and closing the terrace, transforming it into a large living room or reading room. In this project that we show you, the spaces have been divided with a closure made with large glass panels, in an aluminum frame, installed between the floor and ceiling, thus facilitating total waterproofing of the space.

And if there is no terrace, we will create it

A less expensive solution than total closure, avoiding the high costs of aluminum and glass, is to install a system of awnings and pergola and thus create an open terraced area at the foot of the garden. There are currently many water-resistant materials, so the durability of this system is guaranteed.
