How to make scented candles at home

To cut down on my expenses without giving up my candle habit, I decided to try making my own at home with natural wax and essential oils — and I was amazed at how easy it was. While I will probably still buy some of my favorite seasonal candles, I will frequently replace the DIY version because the process was so simple.

All you need is a candle kit, as the entire kit is cheaper than the large 3-wick candles you can normally buy, your favorite essential oils, and a fairly heat-resistant jar to pour the candle into. Once you’ve got everything set up, it’s easy to make multiple candles at once, which makes it super easy to clear out all your Christmas and birthday presents for the year!

Step 1: Prepare the container

Before you start melting wax or mixing flavors, you’ll need something to pour the wax mixture into. To be safe, we recommend making candles only in durable glass containers. I used a set of 16 ounce Mason jars, which are a good size for the candle, but not so large that you use all the wax on one candle. If you already have a candle jar that you like, you can also clean the wax from the jar and reuse the container. Once your candle jars are clean, dry, and ready to use, it’s time to melt the wax.

Step 2: Measure the wax

You can purchase all of your candle making supplies separately, but I have found that it is more economical to purchase a candle making kit that includes all of the wax, wick, and wick centering supplies needed for an entire set of candles. Plus, this kit uses natural soy wax flakes, which burn cleaner than many store-bought scented candles.

Determining how much wax you need for each candle is simple: Fill the container with wax chips to where you want the surface of the candle to begin. Pour the flakes into a pan and measure the same quantity again. Because the flakes melt so much, you will need two containers of flakes for each candle.

Step 3: Melt the wax and add perfume

Once you have measured the wax flakes, melt them over medium heat using a kettle. If you don’t have one, you can use a metal bowl over a pan of water. Gently mix the flakes using a silicone spatula. Once the wax is completely melted, add 10-20 drops of essential oils to the mixture. I used 6 drops of eucalyptus oil and 6 drops of lavender oil for a 16 ounce candle.

Step 4: Attach the wick and pour in the wax

Before pouring the candle, you will need to attach the wick to the bottom of the container. Each wick should have a flat metal bottom; Dip the metal part into the melted wax and place it in the center of the bottom of the jar or container. Hold it in place until the wax hardens and the wick lifts on its own.

Then, carefully remove the wax from the heat and pour it into the container. If the wick comes off the bottom, you can use the wick centering device in the kit to hold it in place. This way, once the wax has hardened, the wick will be exactly in the center of the candle. If you’re using a large container, you can also balance two chopsticks on top of the container to hold the wick in place.

Step 5: Allow the wax to harden

It will take a few hours for the wax to fully harden, so I leave the candles on overnight. Once the candle has hardened completely, you will need to trim the wick. You should always trim the wick of any candle before lighting it, even store-bought ones! You can use scissors, but a wick trimmer is the easiest way to do this. Once you trim the wick to about ¼ inch, the candle is ready to burn.
