Everyone believes they can prepare a tasty barbecue with meat, fish, or vegetables. However, not everyone thinks they can create a grill to cook such a meal for family or friends.
Well, it’s not a very difficult job. It can be said that for bricklayers and weekend builders this can be a fun first project, because it is a fairly easy build, which can help you get familiar with tools and materials like concrete, trowel, or bricks, one of the key items for the type of barbecue we suggest you make.
If you have any questions, give it a try, follow the steps we provide, and you will see that it is not impossible. You can design your own barbecue space, and each time you have someone over for a meal, you will want to share how you accomplished it.
Step 1: Design
First, take a look at some idea books on homify about types of grills and grills, then imagine treating your guests to an unforgettable feast of food and friendship, because this is what it means to make the perfect barbecue. .

Once you have collected all the ideas we can offer you, you can start designing your barbecue. For this, consider the location to calculate the dimensions and evaluate the orientation. Later, that drawing can be used to calculate the materials you need to purchase.
Step 2: Prepare the solar grid

Self-leveling cement should be included among the materials you need to purchase, because the first part of your work will be preparing the base of the grid. As with any job, you have to start with the foundations, and in this case those foundations are a good concrete slab, reinforced if necessary given the dimensions.
And to do this, simply dig a few centimeters, put in some hardware and pour the cement, a mixture of water, gravel and cement, which we recommend self-leveling to level them easily. And as for the size of a floor, it’s a matter of calculation. I mean, based on your project, you can know how much your work will weigh, so in the same building materials store where you buy everything you need, I can tell you what ditch is needed, even though I already told you that it should never exceed 25 or 30 centimeters deep.
Step 3: Begin construction of the grill
The concrete I told you about before is made from gravel, but for this new stage of work we will need mortar, for which you will have to mix sand (6 parts) and cement (1 part) with water. What will we do with the mortar? Let’s join the bricks with which we will raise the grill. A first type of marking of the base of the set, then mortar on the sides and on the top to build.

One by one, alternating them, lining them up so everything comes out straight. Don’t worry, it’s not difficult, even if it’s your first job, you will soon check the resistance of the mortar and, as you gain confidence, you will see that little by little you will have raised the grid. Of course, you always have the level at hand, to check that you are following a good development both horizontally and vertically.
Step 4: The grill itself
So far we have built the entire base of the grill. Imagine that we have raised something like a workbench to the ideal height for cooking. That is, we have reached a height between 70 and 90 centimeters depending on our preferences, and at that height we will light the fire. In other words, we will make the actual barbecue, and for this it is better to use refractory bricks, which absorb the heat we generate with the fire much better.
Not only do you need to create a sort of cube, with an open face, for the cube, but take advantage of it and make wings on the sides to serve as a sideboard for grilling or for seasoning food before grilling. Since you have decided to do this work in your garden, make it as thorough as possible.
Step 5: Grid Types
I commented that it is your first brickwork and that is why in the previous point I advised you to make a very simple grid. That is, a base where you can place the wood and coal to light the fire and three walls of refractory bricks to close that fire and at the same time you can place the grills there with the food you will cook.

However, perhaps you already have some experience handling bricks and mortar and aren’t afraid to try another way. For example, a stepped pyramid to generate a fireplace. And even once it is generated by going back and cutting bricks to create a real oven, in which not only grilled products are churned out, but also authentic steaks and even desserts.
Step 6: Completing the work
With what you have done so far you can light a fire and have a barbecue. You’ve built the main and most expensive one, but with a little extra work you can have a truly spectacular job. For example, lifting the entire grill as I described in step 3, why don’t we take advantage of it and generate some good work shelves. Some very useful spaces for accumulating wood, coal without getting wet in case of rain or barbecue.
And what about the fireplace? Dare to give a greater presence to your grill and build a large fireplace, or prepare its base and purchase the fireplace already prefabricated. The best way to learn to do this type of work is to set yourself challenges and overcome them. And of course, you can realize this proposal and the reward is also unbeatable: having a good built-in grill in your garden.
