Spring cleaning: practical tips that will make your work more pleasant

Spring cleaning or deep cleaning is a yearly tradition that signals the end of winter and the start of spring. When you do spring cleaning, you don’t only vacuum and dust, but you also focus on details, sweep, clean, and wash every part of your home: from walls, windows, and sills to curtains and carpets.

The outcome is a shining and fresh home. Plus, cleanliness also offers many mental and physical health advantages.

List, list, list

It is true that a thorough cleaning takes much more effort and time than regular cleaning. If you have a bigger home, spring cleaning may feel like a burden, but if you follow some of our suggestions you can make this job a pleasant and simple task.

The list of items might not instantly remind you of cleaning, but of organization. So start by getting organized by making a small checklist of the cleaning supplies you have at home. In general, your list should contain cleaning solutions for wood and tiles, window cleaners, dust sprays, disinfectants for toilets and baths, degreasers, dish soaps, laundry soaps, brushes, sponges, cleaning gloves, dry cloths, wet cloths, and trash bags.

The second list is a breakdown of the chores you need to do and in what order. Go into each room and write down everything you plan to do. This way you will be sure not to forget any cleaning supplies you might need, and also to clean the entire house completely.

Relax

It seems surprising, but spring cleaning can be a chance to unwind under certain conditions. One of these is to start cleaning early since it can take a long time. For instance, if you expect guests, begin the work at least a week before they come. This way you won’t be rushed, the chance of only doing a surface clean is much lower, and you will feel relaxed knowing that you don’t have to finish the cleaning “today”.

Moreover, for your relaxation, we suggest listening to music while you clean. So, pick your favorite artist or band and get going.

Clean from top to bottom

Take down curtains and drapes and put them in the washing machine. Clean the light fixtures, walls, windows (both inside and outside), and the ceiling, wipe down doors, and clean the tops of cupboards, dressers, or bookshelves. When you clean your kitchen or pantry, always start by washing the cabinets and upper shelves.

Get rid of unnecessary things in the house

General cleaning is a great chance to discard items that are broken or donate things you no longer need. So, make sure you have a few trash bags ready and get rid of expired items from your kitchen cabinets, fridge, or pantry.
Open the drawers in your child’s room and throw away any papers, old textbooks, or notebooks you don’t need anymore. We suggest putting them in a different bag so you can recycle them later. If your kids have toys they no longer use, spring cleaning is a great chance to gather them up and give them away.

Also set aside clothes that are out of style or that you don’t like anymore into the donation bags. This will clear out a lot of space in your closet and allow room for new things.

Now is also a good moment to store away your winter clothes and freshen up your lighter outfits for spring.

Clean them one by one, not all at once

Because part of general cleaning means taking everything out of cabinets, dressers, and drawers, it can feel overwhelming. That’s why we suggest you work “in sections.” Start with the bedroom and only go to another room once you have finished cleaning the bedroom. This way, you’ll see how much you are accomplishing and won’t feel like it’s an “endless” task.

Focus on the small things

Small details truly make a big difference. For instance, if you’ve washed the walls but forgot to clean the dusty switch, people will notice the dirty switch instead of the clean wall. So remember to clean outlets, door handles, switches, buttons on kitchen gadgets, furniture knobs, light bulbs, or decorative items you have at home.

Take a break and give yourself a reward

Long and regular breaks can lead to great success! Although this phrase was once used jokingly, there seems to be truth in it. It is not necessary and not wise to wear yourself out trying to get everything done in one day. So we suggest that you take breaks regularly: enjoy some tea, coffee, or anything else you like before getting back to your tasks. Moreover, you can use breaks as motivation: “After I finish vacuuming, I’ll take a break and have some tea.”
